Absolutely! Although species like the Trachycarpus fortunei and Chamaerops humilis are strong and tough, that doesn’t mean they can manage without help. Especially when they grow in pots or poor soil, fertilizer is essential to keep their roots healthy and to produce new leaves. A well-fed palm is also better able to withstand cold temperatures and recovers faster after frost damage.
Choose a fertilizer with a balanced NPK ratio, such as 2-1-3 or 3-1-4, with extra magnesium and iron. The latter helps prevent leaf yellowing, which often occurs in palms grown in poor soil. Preferably use an organic fertilizer or slow-release granules applied in spring and mid-summer.
Feed your palm for the first time in early spring (March-April), as soon as the frost has passed. Repeat this in June or July. Never fertilize in autumn or winter – during this resting period, the plant cannot absorb nutrients anyway. Preferably fertilize when the soil is moist to avoid burning the roots.
Then regular feeding is even more important. In a pot, nutrients wash away faster due to watering. Therefore, use a mild, liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks, and make sure your potting soil is well aerated. A mix of potting soil with pumice and perlite is ideal to distribute water and nutrients well and prevent root rot.
Fertilizer works best when you also consider sunlight and air circulation. Hardy palms prefer a sheltered spot with plenty of light. Apply fertilizer preferably on cloudy days or in the morning, so the leaves don’t burn from direct sunlight combined with fertilizer.
