Palm trees may seem sturdy, but they are still plants that need nutrients. Without the right nutrients, they grow slowly, their leaves discolor, or root development stalls. Especially in potting soil, where nutrients get depleted, feeding is essential to keep your palm healthy.
Have you just sown palm seeds or has your seedling just sprouted? Then caution is needed. Only start feeding once the second or third leaf appears, and choose a mild, liquid organic fertilizer. A little Nitrozyme diluted with water works perfectly – and prevents the delicate roots from burning.
Palms in pots or containers are not in natural soil. Therefore, it is more important than ever to regularly replenish nutrients. Use a balanced fertilizer with nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) from April through September. Note: it’s better to give too little than too much. Once a month is often enough, and always apply to moist soil to prevent burning.
Does your palm grow outside in the garden? Then it usually needs less nutrition than in a pot, but in poor sandy soil some extra help won’t hurt. Use slow-release fertilizer granules in spring, and a second time around July. Optionally add some pumice or compost for airy soil and good water retention.
Definitely. Tropical species like the Blue Latan Palm like regular feeding during the growing season, preferably with extra magnesium for that deep green color. Hardy species like Trachycarpus fortunei need less and grow more slowly. Fertilizing once every 6-8 weeks in spring is often sufficient.
