Imagine having one of the rarest dragon blood trees in miniature form in your own living room. A magical Dragon Blood Tree Bonsai.
Grow your own Bonsai Dragon Blood Tree, a miniature dracaena draco, that resembles the Dragon Blood Tree found in Icod de los Vinos in Tenerife (also known as the Drago Milenario or the thousand-year-old dragon blood tree). Or a mini dracaena cinnabari dragon blood tree from Socotra...
That’s why I started a small experiment to create Bonsai Dracos from some of my dragon blood tree seedlings. I have taken 14 seedlings from the dracaena draco species for this experiment. They have all already formed a small trunk.
I will regularly update this blog post to share the progress of the experiment in images and text. If you also want to test it yourself or are already working on it and have comments and/or questions, I would love to see them in the comments section of the blog.
Today (October 20, 2020) I took the first step in the experiment to create Bonsais from my dragon blood tree seedlings. The goal is to create a dragon blood tree Bonsai with multiple branches. As a start, I made sure to remove all the "noise" and form a solid base for the development of the Bonsai Dracos.

I shortened the root ball of each dragon blood tree by a third. This means I trimmed back the roots and used less soil. Then, I broke the top core from each seedling and pruned all the leaves back to just above the trunk. The purpose of pruning the leaves is to slow down growth and direct energy to the broken top. The concentrated energy should hopefully encourage new side shoots to emerge at the top. The next step is to let them winter in a warm, dry, and bright place so they can recover and start developing. The first step towards the Bonsai Dragon Blood Tree has been taken!
