Large leaves, deep divisions, and a generous dose of tropical flair: the Philodendron Selloum is made to stand out. The species is now often botanically referred to as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum and can grow into an impressive, upright foliage plant.
Fortunately, it doesn’t require a complicated care routine. With warmth, sufficient light, airy potting soil, and the right amount of water, you’ll already be well on your way.
After transport, your plant needs some time to recover. Place it in a bright, warm spot and avoid major temperature fluctuations during the first few days.
Check the potting soil before watering. If the soil is still moist, let it rest for a while first. An extra splash of water out of enthusiasm is usually less helpful than a few days of rest.
Philodendron Selloum prefers a bright location. Plenty of bright, indirect light helps the plant develop strong leaves and compact growth.
A spot close to a window is ideal. Preferably avoid prolonged exposure to strong afternoon sun, especially if the plant is not used to it. Too much direct sunlight can cause scorched or faded leaves.
A dark spot is not a good idea either. The plant may survive there, but growth will often be slower and the leaves may remain smaller.
This plant’s natural environment is warm and humid, but that doesn’t mean its roots want to remain permanently wet.
Water when the top layer of the potting soil begins to dry slightly. In spring and summer, the plant will use more water than during the darker winter months.
Always use a pot with drainage holes. Let excess water drain from the pot and remove any water that remains at the bottom of a decorative pot.
Higher humidity helps Philodendron Selloum develop beautiful leaves. Especially during dry winter months, the air indoors can become very dry.
A humidifier is a good solution. Grouping several plants together can also help. Regularly cleaning the leaves with a soft, damp cloth is beneficial for the plant’s appearance as well.
Use an airy, well-draining potting mix. A combination of potting soil with, for example, coconut fiber, perlite, and pumice creates an open structure that allows water to drain away and gives the roots sufficient oxygen.
When the roots completely fill the pot or the plant dries out noticeably quickly, it’s time to repot. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger. A huge pot with lots of wet soil around a relatively small root ball can actually cause problems.
A single older leaf turning yellow doesn’t have to be a reason to panic. Plants naturally replace older leaves from time to time.
If several leaves turn yellow at once, first check your watering routine and drainage. Soil that is too wet is a common cause. Too little light can also affect growth.
Brown leaf edges may instead indicate dry air, inconsistent watering, or a location that is too dry.
Philodendron Selloum can become quite large. As the plant matures, its leaves also become more impressive. Give it enough space around the plant so the leaves can develop beautifully.
A young plant may still look compact, but don’t be mistaken: this tropical beauty has plenty of potential.
Perhaps the most enjoyable thing about Philodendron Selloum is watching it develop. Each new leaf makes the plant a little more impressive. Give it a warm spot, sufficient light, and airy soil, then let it follow its own pace.
Before you know it, you’ll have not just a small green plant, but a true tropical showstopper in your living room. 🌿
