Have you ever seen a plant that looks like it came straight out of Jurassic Park? Meet the Alocasia, also known as Elephant Ear, African Mask Plant, or – among friends – the ‘Drama Queen’ of the plant world. With its impressive leaves and tropical vibes, the Alocasia is an absolute must-have for every plant lover. But beware: this green diva has its quirks! Grab a cup of tea (or a cocktail with a tropical umbrella) and discover everything about this spectacular eye-catcher.
If you ever thought you could use Alocasia leaves as an umbrella, you’re not far from the truth. In the wild – that is, the humid rainforests of Asia and South America – these giant leaves grow to capture as much sunlight as possible. Some species can grow up to a meter long! That means you’re not the only one who loves sunbathing. The Alocasia is a true sun lover, but beware: too much direct sunlight and it will turn into a crispy leaf faster than you after a day without sunscreen.

The Alocasia Polly, also called Alocasia Amazonica, is the perfect choice for those who want an exotic touch without having to build an urban jungle right away. Its shiny, dark green leaves with contrasting white veins look like they came from a fantasy movie. This is a statement plant that immediately gives your interior a chic and mysterious look.
But beware: Polly is not the easiest to care for. It loves high humidity, and if it’s unhappy, it will let you know right away by drooping its leaves like a dramatic soap star. Make sure to spray regularly, provide indirect light, and use well-draining potting soil, and you’ll have a happy plant child.
Fun fact: the Alocasia Polly can ‘sweat’. This is called guttation and means it releases excess moisture through its leaves. So don’t panic if you see mysterious drops on your plant in the morning – it’s not crying, it’s just regulating its moisture balance!

If there were ever a runway for plants, the Alocasia Zebrina would be front and center. What makes this species so unique? Its striped stems! Yes, you read that right. The stems of this beauty have a zebra pattern, making it look like a tropical supermodel in animal print. Combine that with its elegant arrow-shaped leaves and you have an absolute eye-catcher in your home.
The Zebrina grows faster than you think and can get quite large with the right care. Provide a spacious pot and give it enough room to shine. It loves a bright spot but no direct sunlight. And just like a true fashionista? It’s quite picky. Too little water? Upset. Too much water? Also upset. Make sure to keep the soil lightly moist and use airy potting soil for a happy Zebrina.
Another cool fact: in the wild, this plant grows along riverbanks and in swampy areas, which means it loves humid air. Place it next to other plants or use a humidifier to really make it feel at home.

Want a plant that literally can’t be overlooked? Then the Alocasia Macrorrhiza, also known as ‘Giant Taro’, is the ultimate showstopper. This giant can grow up to 2 meters tall under the right conditions, with leaves larger than your head. If you’ve ever wanted to create a tropical mini-forest in your living room, this is your chance.
This giant grows best with plenty of light and regular watering, but watch out for soggy roots! Like many Alocasias, it doesn’t like constant wetness around its roots. Place it in well-draining soil and give it space to fully show off its jungle vibes.
A fun fact about the Macrorrhiza: in some parts of the world, this plant is used as food! The root tubers are edible when properly cooked. But uh… maybe better to keep it just as decoration and grab a bag of chips instead.
Will you go for the mysterious Polly, the striped fashionista Zebrina, or the gigantic Macrorrhiza? Whatever your choice, an Alocasia will definitely give your interior a tropical touch and a good dose of character. Which one will be your new green housemate? 🌿✨
