Have you just brought home a Dracaena Cinnabari dragon’s blood tree? Congratulations! 🌱 This rare and mysterious tree from the island of Socotra is not just a houseplant – it’s a botanical story on a trunk. But before it transforms your home into a mini-Socotra, it needs some time to settle. In this blog, you’ll read exactly what to do upon arrival and how to care for this desert king in the long term.
The plant has been through a journey and needs to recover. Carefully take it out of the box, remove any protective materials, and place it in a calm, bright spot without direct midday sun. Start with morning sun or late afternoon sun and gradually increase exposure – a little longer each day.
Repotting? Not necessary. The pot it comes in contains a mix including pumice that buffers water so the roots can drink slowly. Leave it in this pot for at least 6 to 12 months. Give the plant its rest and hold off on feeding for now.
The Dracaena Cinnabari is used to extremely dry conditions. So only water when the top layer (3-4 cm) of the soil feels completely dry. In spring and summer, this is about once every 1-2 weeks, depending on your indoor climate. Much less in autumn and winter. Too much water = root rot. Trust the pumice and your fingers.
This plant does not like cold. As soon as nighttime temperatures drop below 8 °C, move it indoors. Choose a bright and warm spot, such as a sunny windowsill. Note: the plant is sensitive to drafts. Avoid cold windows and places near doors that open and close frequently.
Your plant doesn’t need feeding for the first few months. When you see new growth (a fresh green tip in the center), you can start with low doses of organic fertilizer or Nitrozyme. Note: always dilute fertilizer. Feed only during the growing season (spring-summer). Too much fertilizer = burnt roots.
You recognize growth by a new, light green tip in the middle of the crown. Keep your expectations realistic: this tree grows slowly. Think months rather than weeks. But that’s exactly what makes it special – the Dracaena is not a racehorse, but a lifelong companion.
