Adansonia grandidieri (Baobab from Madagascar) sowing, growing, and care

Adansonia grandidieri (Baobab from Madagascar) sowing, growing, and care

Home   Insights   Adansonia grandidieri (Baobab from Madagascar) sowing, growing, and care

In other words: how to grow a mini Baobab like a true tree whisperer

It looks like it accidentally wandered into a Pixar movie. Its trunk is thicker than the ego of an average influencer. And it comes from a place where nature is just absurdly beautiful.

Meet the Adansonia grandidieri – the giant baobab of Madagascar. And yes: you can grow this tree legend yourself. How? Read on.

What is the Adansonia grandidieri?

The Adansonia grandidieri is the largest and most iconic of the six baobab species in Madagascar. This gigantic tree can grow up to 30 meters tall, with a trunk so thick you could build a house inside it (they really do, by the way).

It is also called the “Tree of Life.” And rightly so:

  • Its fruits are edible (packed with vitamin C)
  • It stores water in its trunk (yes, really)
  • It lives for hundreds – sometimes thousands – of years

Small disclaimer: the version you grow at home will probably still fit on your windowsill (for now 😉).

What is the Adansonia grandidieri

How do you sow a baobab (Adansonia grandidieri)?

Ready to grow a piece of Madagascar in your living room? Let’s go.

  • Step 1: Soak the seeds
Baobab seeds have a hard shell. Soak them for 24 to 48 hours in warm water to break dormancy.
You can also gently file the outside a bit or pour hot water over them for better absorption. #seedspa
  • Step 2: Plant them shallowly
Use airy, well-draining soil (think cactus mix or a blend of coconut fiber, perlite, and sand). Push the seed about 1-2 cm into the soil.
  • Step 3: Warmth & patience

Baobabs are tropical, so they love warmth. Think 25-30°C as the germination temperature. Place them in a warm spot or use a heating mat.
Germination time? It can vary from 2 to 6 weeks, so get your zen mode on.

Caring for your baby baobab

Once you have a sprout? Congrats! Now it’s time to raise your baobab like a loving plant parent.

  • Light
☀️ As much light as possible. In summer, outside in a sunny spot; in winter, by a south-facing window.
  • Water
💧 Baobabs are thirsty during the growing season (spring/summer), but have a rest period in autumn and winter. Then: less water or even let it dry out.
  • Soil
🌱 Well-draining, poor soil. No rich potting soil. You don’t want soggy roots (or root rot).
  • Pot
🪴 Start small, repot as it grows. Always ensure good drainage.
  • Temperature
🌡️ Keep it tropical. Below 15°C your baobab gets sad. Frost? No go.

Does a baobab go dormant in winter?

Yup! Just like some people in January. The baobab loses its leaves in winter and sometimes looks dead. But: that’s normal. Leave it alone, give little to no water, and it will come back in spring like a phoenix from the ashes. Or well, like a tree from a branch.

Does a baobab go dormant in winter

Does it really get that big?

In the wild? Yes. At your home? Not really.
You can easily keep your baobab in check as a bonsai-style mini tree. It grows slowly, so no worries about your roof coming off.

If you want it to grow bigger? Just give it more space, sun, and time.

Why grow a baobab?

  • Because you bring a living legend into your home
  • Because it’s unique – no other tree looks like it
  • Because it’s super fun to watch it grow
  • Because it has something magical. Seriously.
  • And simply because you can

Bonus: you as a tree hero

Whether you’re an experienced grower or just starting out: growing a baobab isn’t rocket science – it’s plant magic. With a little love, light, and patience, you’ll soon grow a mini baobab that even the tree whisperer would envy.

And be honest… how many people do you know with a tree at home that looks like an upside-down root with superpowers?
