Euphorbia gottlebei – a spiny rarity from Madagascar
Slender, spiny, and wonderfully quirky: Euphorbia gottlebei is a special Madagascan Euphorbia that looks as though nature has combined a cactus and a shrub in one design. The spiny stems, narrow green leaves, and irregular branching give this rare species a rugged, almost prehistoric appearance.
Euphorbia gottlebei is native exclusively to Madagascar and is a true plant for enthusiasts of unusual Euphorbias. As the plant ages, it develops branched, succulent stems with prominent spines. During the growing season, narrow green leaves appear between the spines. As if that were not enough character, it can also produce small red to pinkish-red inflorescences.
Why choose an Euphorbia gottlebei?
Rare: A special Euphorbia from Madagascar that you will not easily find in the average garden centre.
Sculptural: The combination of spiny stems, delicate leaves, and irregular branching makes every plant different.
Collector's item: An interesting species for enthusiasts and collectors of rare Euphorbias and succulents.
Character: Not a conventional houseplant, but a living sculpture that only becomes more interesting over the years.
Care tip: Place your Euphorbia gottlebei in a bright to sunny, warm spot. Use a very well-draining, mineral-rich cactus or succulent substrate and allow the substrate to dry out thoroughly between waterings. During the warmer growing season, it may be watered somewhat more regularly, but in winter keep it considerably drier. Wet feet? This Madagascan lady would rather avoid those.
Give it warmth, plenty of light, and above all, never keep the potting soil permanently wet. In return, you will get a rare Euphorbia that slowly grows into an increasingly irregular and impressive specimen. Exactly the kind of plant that eventually makes visitors ask: what is that?
Growth: A slow- to moderately growing, branching Euphorbia that can develop an increasingly shrubby and irregular form as it ages.
Water requirements: During the active growing season, water when the substrate has mostly dried out. Keep the plant considerably drier in winter and prevent the roots from remaining wet for extended periods.
Humidity: Does not require high humidity and prefers a warm, well-ventilated position.
Soil: Use a very airy, mineral-rich, and excellently draining cactus or succulent substrate.
Fertiliser: During the growing season, fertilise sparingly with suitable cactus or succulent fertiliser.

Voel daarom even hoe droog de aarde nu is.

Groene groet,
Mark
