A Coffea arabica may well be one of the most enjoyable plants to have at home. Not only because it is beautiful with its glossy green leaves, but also because it reminds you that coffee starts somewhere before it ends up in your cup.
With the right care, a coffee plant can continue growing for many years. Below, you’ll find out how to keep it strong, green, and healthy.
Has your coffee plant just completed a journey? Place it in a warm and bright spot and let it acclimatize calmly. It is normal for a plant to temporarily droop a little after transportation.
Do not place it directly above a radiator and avoid cold drafts. Check the potting soil before watering. A plant that has just arrived does not automatically need extra water straight away.
Coffea arabica originally comes from a warm climate and likes plenty of light. Therefore, choose a spot with plenty of bright, indirect light. An east- or west-facing window can work excellently.
Strong, direct afternoon sunlight can damage the leaves, especially when the plant is not used to it. If your coffee plant is outside in summer, let it gradually acclimatize to the light.
The coffee plant likes evenly moist potting soil. So do not let the root ball dry out completely, but at the same time prevent the roots from constantly sitting in water.
Feel the top layer of the potting soil with your finger. If it feels dry, it is time to water. In winter, when the plant grows less actively, you can reduce watering.
Good drainage is important. Use a pot with drainage holes and always allow excess water to drain away.
Coffea arabica likes higher humidity. Dry heated air can be especially challenging in winter.
It is therefore best not to place the plant directly next to a radiator. You can increase humidity by grouping several plants together or using a humidifier.
Wiping the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth is also a simple way to remove dust and keep the leaves looking beautifully glossy.
During the active growing season, you can regularly give Coffea arabica liquid plant fertilizer. It is better to use a regular dose than too much fertilizer at once.
A healthy coffee plant regularly produces new leaves. If you notice that growth has clearly stalled while light, water, and temperature are all suitable, additional fertilizer during the growing season may help.
Under good conditions, a mature Coffea arabica can produce flowers and later coffee cherries. However, this requires time, sufficient light, and good care.
The white flowers are followed by berries that slowly change color as they ripen. Each berry generally contains two seeds: the coffee beans.
So if you eventually see small white flowers appearing, you’ll know that your coffee plant has entered a new phase.
A Coffea arabica does not require complicated care, but it does need a little attention. Give it warmth, sufficient light, regular watering, and pleasant humidity.
And perhaps one day you’ll look at your own coffee plant and think: this is where my coffee began. It takes a while, but the story has already begun. ☕🌱
