All about the Dracaena cinnabari (Dragon’s Blood Tree from Socotra). Or as we affectionately call it: the tree with attitude.

🧬 What is the Dracaena cinnabari?

The Dracaena cinnabari, better known as the dragon’s blood tree, is a rare and iconic tree that only grows on the mysterious island of Socotra (you know, that place that looks like it could be the set of a Star Wars movie).

What makes it so special? Its umbrella-shaped canopy, its almost otherworldly appearance, and its red resin, also called dragon’s blood. Yep, this tree bleeds red sap. Metal.

🌍 Where does the Dracaena Cinnabari come from?

This living legend naturally grows only on Socotra, an island near Yemen in the Arabian Sea. Because it’s found nowhere else, it’s rare and protected. But don’t worry: the seeds we sell are legally obtained and sustainably harvested.

Where does the Socotra Dracaena Cinnabari dragon’s blood tree come from?

❤️ Why do you want this tree in your life?

✅ It’s rare – and you’re not a standard type either, right?

✅ It grows slowly but tough – just like all good things in life

✅ It has symbolism – in some cultures, the dragon’s blood tree stands for protection, strength, and magic

✅ It’s a conversation starter – literally everyone asks: “What’s that cool tree?!”

🌱 How do you grow a Dracaena Cinnabari dragon’s blood tree?

Need growing experience? Nope. Just a bit of patience.

  1. Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24-48 hours
  2. Plant them in airy soil, like coco fiber or cactus mix
  3. Warmth is key: 25-30°C is ideal. Think tropical. Think vacation vibes.
  4. Light, but not direct sunlight
  5. Patience, Jedi – germination time is between 2 and 8 weeks

Bonus: it grows slowly, so you don’t have to repot it every month.

❄️ Is it frost-hardy?

Nope. The Dracaena cinnabari doesn’t like cold. It’s a true sun lover. In the Netherlands or Belgium, it feels best as a houseplant or in a greenhouse. Temperatures below 10°C? It gets the chills. But in spring, it loves to be outside in the sunshine ;-)

🧪 What is that red sap then?

That’s dragon’s blood, a resin that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, as a dye, in rituals, and yes... in myths. Don’t worry: if you just treat the plant with love, you don’t have to make it bleed. #teamplantrights

🤔 Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the tree that bleeds?
→ Yep. But only if you damage the bark. And of course, we don’t do that, plant friends!

What’s the difference with Dracaena draco?
→ Good question. Dracaena draco comes from the Canary Islands, Madeira, and Cape Verde. It looks similar but has different leaf shapes and grows differently. Also cool, but we’re team cinnabari.

Can I keep it as a bonsai?
→ Yes, it grows slowly and compactly, so with some love you can grow a mini-dragon.

✨ You + this tree = plant match made in heaven

Whether you’re a plant collector, gardener, adventurer, or just a sucker for rare things – the Dracaena cinnabari is the ultimate crown jewel of your jungle.
