How to Use Vermiculite Properly: Applications for Seeds and Plants

How to Use Vermiculite Properly: Applications for Seeds and Plants

Home   Insights   How to Use Vermiculite Properly: Applications for Seeds and Plants

July 13, 2024

Vermiculite is a versatile and environmentally friendly material that can be a valuable addition to any garden or growing space. It is often used because of its excellent properties, such as high moisture retention, low bulk density, and the fact that it is free from pathogens, seeds, insects, and nematodes. In this blog, we discuss various applications of vermiculite for seeds and plants, including palm seeds, dragon blood tree seeds, herb seeds, and other plant and tree seeds. We also provide a mini walkthrough for each application.

What is Vermiculite?

Vermiculite is a mineral that belongs to the phyllosilicate group, like mica. It is extracted as a golden-brown flaky ore with a layered structure. During the production process, raw vermiculite is heated to about 750 °C, causing the water in the layers to evaporate and the material to expand into a light, porous granulate. This process makes vermiculite inorganic and sterile, making it free from pathogens, seeds, insects, and nematodes. The final product is a beige, accordion-shaped granulate with various grain sizes from fine 0-3 mm, known as grain 2 or F2, to medium 0-5 mm, known as grain 3 or F3.0-5 mm.

Applications of Vermiculite

1. Seed Medium for Seeds

Vermiculite is ideal as a seed medium due to its excellent moisture retention and air capacity. It provides a balanced water and air ratio, which is essential for the germination of seeds such as palm seeds, dragon blood tree seeds, herb seeds, and other plant and tree seeds.

Mini Walkthrough: Sowing with Vermiculite

  • Preparation: Fill a seed tray or pot with a mixture of vermiculite and potting soil in a 50:50 ratio.
  • Sowing: Evenly distribute the seeds over the surface and lightly cover them with a thin layer of vermiculite.
  • Watering: Gently spray the surface with water to moisten the vermiculite and the seeds.
  • Covering: Cover the seed tray with a transparent lid or plastic wrap to create a mini greenhouse effect and retain moisture.
  • Maintenance: Keep the vermiculite moist by spraying regularly. Make sure the seeds do not dry out.
  • Germination: Once the seeds have germinated, remove the cover and place the seedlings in a bright spot.

2. Soil Structure Improvement

Vermiculite can be used to improve soil structure. It provides better drainage and aeration, which is especially beneficial for clay soils. This is ideal for the growth of various plants, including trees and shrubs grown from seeds.

Mini Walkthrough: Soil Improvement with Vermiculite

  • Preparation: Dig up the top 15-20 cm of soil.
  • Addition: Mix vermiculite into the dug soil at a ratio of 20% vermiculite to 80% soil.
  • Incorporation: Work the vermiculite thoroughly into the soil to ensure even distribution.
  • Planting: Plant your plants or seeds as usual in the improved soil.
  • Maintenance: Water as usual. The vermiculite helps retain moisture and promotes better root growth.

3. Rooting Cuttings

Vermiculite is also very suitable for rooting cuttings because it provides a sterile and moist environment that promotes root growth. This is especially useful for cuttings from trees and plants that are difficult to root, such as the dragon blood tree.

Mini Walkthrough: Rooting Cuttings with Vermiculite

  • Preparation: Fill a pot or tray with pure vermiculite.
  • Cuttings: Cut healthy cuttings from the mother plant and remove the lower leaves.
  • Insertion: Place the cuttings into the vermiculite and gently press the vermiculite around the cuttings.
  • Watering: Thoroughly spray the vermiculite with water until it is well moist.
  • Covering: Cover the pot or tray with a plastic bag to maintain high humidity.
  • Maintenance: Keep the vermiculite moist by spraying regularly. Ventilate the plastic bag occasionally to prevent mold formation.
  • Root Formation: After a few weeks, the cuttings should have developed roots and can be transplanted into potting soil.

4. Storage of Seeds, Bulbs, and Tubers

Vermiculite can also be used to store bulbs and tubers. It helps maintain a constant humidity level and prevents rotting.

Mini Walkthrough: Storage of Bulbs with Vermiculite

  • Preparation: Fill a container with a layer of vermiculite.
  • Placement: Place the bulbs or tubers in the container, making sure they do not touch each other.
  • Covering: Cover the bulbs or tubers with a layer of vermiculite.
  • Storage: Store the container in a cool, dark place with a stable temperature.
  • Check: Occasionally check the bulbs or tubers and remove any that are affected.

Vermiculite is a versatile and valuable material for gardeners and hobby growers. Whether you want to germinate seeds, improve soil structure, root cuttings, or store seeds and bulbs, vermiculite offers many benefits. It is inorganic and sterile, free from pathogens, seeds, insects, and nematodes, and has high moisture retention and low density. By using vermiculite in your garden or growing space, you can significantly improve the health and growth of your plants. Try it yourself with palm seeds, dragon blood tree seeds, herb seeds, and other plant and tree seeds, and watch your garden flourish!
