5 tips for caring for your own Dragon Blood Tree seedlings

5 tips for caring for your own Dragon Blood Tree seedlings

Home   Insights   5 tips for caring for your own Dragon Blood Tree seedlings

May 23, 2023

The Dragon Blood Tree is a grateful houseplant and requires little care. It is a beautiful plant for your living room and garden. In this blog, there are a few tips to enjoy this magical and unique tree for a long time. This care applies to the Dragon Blood Tree species: Dracaena Draco, Dracaena Cinnabari, and Dracaena Serrulata.

Water

In the desert, the Dragon Blood Tree has an ingenious survival mechanism, using mist to obtain water and preventing evaporation through its canopy. In our climate, it is best to water it regularly. To prevent the roots from rotting, it is advisable to ensure that it does not get waterlogged.

Drainage

To prevent the roots from getting too much water, good drainage is important. I use good potting soil, coconut fiber mixed with perlite granules. A good ratio is 60% potting soil, 20% coconut soil, and 20% perlite granules. A good substrate alternative consists of a mixture of coconut fibers and pumice granules.

Repotting

As soon as you notice that the roots of the Dragon Blood Tree are pushing out of the pot, it is time to repot the tree into a larger pot. If you want a good and sturdy trunk development, it is better not to choose a pot that is too large. Experience shows that the tree grows too quickly in a pot that is too large and develops a trunk that is too narrow. Again, place a new mixture of coconut soil and perlite in the new pot and press it down. After that, give the tree enough water.

Light and Heat

For good growth, the Dragon Blood Tree needs a lot of light and sufficient warmth. Therefore, place the tree in a bright and warm spot in your living room – preferably near a window and heating. If possible, you can place it in your garden in the spring. Just be careful that it does not come into direct contact with sunlight right away. Let the Dragon Blood Tree gradually acclimate by placing it in the morning sun for a few hours and extending that every day. Bring your tree back inside once it starts to freeze in the fall.

Nourishment

To promote the development of the Dragon Blood Tree, you can give it extra nourishment. I personally advocate for an organic combination of blood meal granules and bone meal granules. You can also opt for artificial fertilizers like osmocote granules that – due to the special coating – only release nutrients when the granules are wet and warm. With other fertilizers, there is a risk that the roots will burn due to a too high concentration of fertilizers at once. This way, your tree has enough nourishment at the right times, and you will enjoy it longer.

Follow these steps to care for your own Dragon Blood Tree, and you will have a grateful, mysterious tree for the rest of your life. Moreover, you are also contributing to the preservation and protection of this endangered tree ;-)
