Congratulations on your new pistachio plant!

Whether you chose a Pistacia vera ‘Peter’ (male) or Pistacia vera ‘Kerman’ (female), you have brought home a special, winter-hardy nut tree. These trees can eventually produce real pistachio nuts, provided you have both a male and a female plant. In this blog, you’ll learn how to best care for your new pistachio plant—from day one to healthy blooming in spring.

First aid upon arrival of your pistachio plant

Your pistachio plant is delivered without a pot, wrapped in protective packaging. After receiving it, place it immediately in a spacious pot with well-aerated potting soil or plant it directly outside in the ground if the season allows. Make sure the roots don’t dry out, but also don’t sit in soggy soil. The plant has been through a journey, so give it a few days of rest in a bright spot without strong afternoon sun.

Leaf loss in autumn? Completely normal!

The Pistacia vera is a deciduous plant. In autumn, it loses all its leaves—so don’t be alarmed if you see a bare plant. This is part of its natural cycle. It prefers to overwinter in a cool place, such as a cold greenhouse, veranda, or unheated room. Water sparingly during this period. In spring, it will sprout fresh green new leaves again.

Water & feeding: how to keep your plant in top condition

Water the pistachio plant regularly during the growing season (spring/summer), but let the soil dry out between waterings. Keep it almost dry in winter. Feed it once a month in spring and summer with some organic fertilizer, such as Nitrozyme or liquid seaweed fertilizer. The pistachio plant is hardy but does not like wet feet.

What to watch for in care?

  • Location: lots of sun! After the frost period, the plant can go outside—the sunnier, the better.
  • Potting soil: airy mix of potting soil with pumice, perlite, and coconut fiber.
  • Pruning: not necessary, but you can lightly prune it in spring for a more compact shape.

Three fun facts about the pistachio plant

  • Fruits: Only female plants bear fruit—but you do need a male plant nearby for pollination.
  • Winter rest: Pistachio plants need a rest period in autumn/winter. This helps them grow vigorously in spring.
  • Extremely hardy: This species originates from dry, warm areas and tolerates both drought and cold (down to -10 °C).

Excited about the pistachio plant?

Would you like to care for a Pistacia vera ‘Kerman’ or ‘Peter’ yourself? Or both, so you can even harvest pistachio nuts in the future? Then check out our pistachio plants in the webshop and give these tough, characterful trees a nice spot in your garden or conservatory.

Already have a plant at home? We wish you lots of fun caring for and raising your new pistachio adventure!
