When you think of a palm, do you picture a tropical island with swaying leaves and a coconut in your hand? Think again! The Cycas Revoluta, also known as the Japanese Sago Palm or simply Cycas, has survived for millions of years and looks like it came straight from the dinosaur era. So, not an ordinary palm, but a tough, almost prehistoric eye-catcher that adds a touch of exotic class to your interior or garden. Ready to discover everything about this living fossil? Grab a chair and let’s go! 🚀

The Cycas Revoluta is not a true palm but a cycad – a plant species that existed when dinosaurs still roamed the earth. This ancient survivor has perfected the art of patience and durability. It grows incredibly slowly and can live for centuries under the right conditions. Yep, this plant will probably outlive generations of you and me.
What makes the Cycas extra unique is its shape: a thick, sturdy trunk with elegant, feather-like leaves forming a perfectly symmetrical crown. It looks like a miniature palm tree but has the toughness of a cactus. Sounds like the ideal plant, right? But beware, it has a spicy side…

If you like fast growers, better go for bamboo, because the Cycas takes its time. This plant grows on average only 2 to 5 cm per year! That means a half-meter specimen is already quite old. But that also makes it perfect for people who don’t like much maintenance – it hardly changes and keeps the same stylish look for years.
A fun feature is that the Cycas occasionally does a ‘flush’: suddenly a bunch of new leaves grow from the core, as if it decides to undergo a complete makeover. But patience is a virtue, as this usually happens only once a year.
You might think a plant that has survived millions of years is invincible. And it almost is. The Cycas can handle drought, full sun, cold down to -10°C, and even short periods of neglect. But beware: its leaves are toxic to pets and small children. So if you have a nibbling cat or a curious dog, place this beauty somewhere safe.
Also, over time the Cycas can develop an impressive trunk that looks like a bonsai on steroids. This makes it not only a great indoor and garden plant but also a showpiece in any green paradise.
Whether you place it indoors in a large pot or outside in your garden, the Cycas fits everywhere. Indoors it gives an exotic, luxurious look, and outdoors it can survive the Dutch climate if well protected from extreme frost. In warmer countries, it grows into a meter-high eye-catcher, but here it usually stays modest in size.
Want it in the garden? Make sure the soil drains well and the spot gets enough light. But note: in pots it needs a bit more care, especially in winter. Don’t forget to bring it inside or cover it when temperatures drop significantly.

If you’re looking for a special, timeless, and easy plant, the Cycas Revoluta is a perfect choice. Whether you place it indoors as a decorative eye-catcher or outside as an exotic showpiece, this tough plant will surely bring style and character to your green collection. 🌿✨
