Vermiculite is a versatile and environmentally friendly material that can be a valuable addition to any garden or growing space. It is often used because of its excellent properties, such as high moisture retention, low bulk density, and the fact that it is free from pathogens, seeds, insects, and nematodes. In this blog, we discuss various applications of vermiculite for seeds and plants, including palm seeds, dragon blood tree seeds, herb seeds, and other plant and tree seeds. We also provide a mini walkthrough for each application.
Vermiculite is a mineral that belongs to the phyllosilicate group, like mica. It is extracted as a golden-brown flaky ore with a layered structure. During the production process, raw vermiculite is heated to about 750 °C, causing the water in the layers to evaporate and the material to expand into a light, porous granulate. This process makes vermiculite inorganic and sterile, making it free from pathogens, seeds, insects, and nematodes. The final product is a beige, accordion-shaped granulate with various grain sizes from fine 0-3 mm, known as grain 2 or F2, to medium 0-5 mm, known as grain 3 or F3.0-5 mm.
Vermiculite is ideal as a seed medium due to its excellent moisture retention and air capacity. It provides a balanced water and air ratio, which is essential for the germination of seeds such as palm seeds, dragon blood tree seeds, herb seeds, and other plant and tree seeds.
Vermiculite can be used to improve soil structure. It provides better drainage and aeration, which is especially beneficial for clay soils. This is ideal for the growth of various plants, including trees and shrubs grown from seeds.
Vermiculite is also very suitable for rooting cuttings because it provides a sterile and moist environment that promotes root growth. This is especially useful for cuttings from trees and plants that are difficult to root, such as the dragon blood tree.
Vermiculite can also be used to store bulbs and tubers. It helps maintain a constant humidity level and prevents rotting.
