Growing Acacia tortilis from seed – Everything about germination & care

Growing Acacia tortilis from seed – Everything about germination & care

Home   Insights   Growing Acacia tortilis from seed – Everything about germination & care

April 18, 2025

The Acacia tortilis, also known as the umbrella acacia or Umbrella Thorn, is one of the most distinctive trees of the African savanna. Good news: you can grow this tough shade provider yourself – straight from seed! In this comprehensive growing guide, you’ll learn how to do it, including smart tips for substrate, germination, and care of your young tree. 🌳

Step 1: Seed Preparation – the Key to Success

Acacia tortilis seeds have a hard outer shell that nature uses as a natural vault. To break this dormancy, it’s smart to scarify the seeds. You can do this by gently sanding a small part of the seed with sandpaper or a nail file, just enough to break the outer layer. Then soak them for 24 to 48 hours in lukewarm water. This activates the inside of the seed and allows the germination process to begin.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Substrate

Acacias prefer well-draining, dry soils. A loose mixture is essential to prevent root rot in young plants. We recommend this mix:

  • 60% coconut fiber – airy, natural, and moisture-regulating
  • 40% pumice – perfect for drainage and aeration

This combination perfectly mimics the dry, rocky savanna soil and helps your seeds germinate under the best conditions.

Step 3: Time to Sow

Fill a 9 cm pot or a deeper growing pot with the mixture, moisten the soil, and press the seed about 1 to 1.5 cm deep into the soil. Cover lightly, press down, and optionally cover the pot with plastic wrap or a transparent lid to maintain a slightly moist microclimate. Don’t forget to air it out daily.

Step 4: Warmth & Light

Place the pot on a warm, sunny windowsill (preferably east- or west-facing). Temperatures between 24 and 30°C are ideal. A heat mat can speed up the process but isn’t necessary if you have a well-heated spot. Keep the substrate lightly moist – not wet!

Step 5: Waiting for Germination (and a Little Patience)

Germination of Acacia tortilis seeds usually takes 1 to 4 weeks, depending on temperature and seed quality. Don’t be discouraged if it takes a bit longer – some seeds take their time. Once the first leaves appear, you know you’re on the right track!

Step 6: Care After Germination

Now the real work begins: keeping your seedling healthy as it grows. Acacias love the sun, so place your seedling in a sunny spot with plenty of light. Water only when the top of the soil feels dry. Better slightly dry than too wet – Acacias don’t like soggy roots.

After a few weeks, you can move it to a slightly larger pot. Use the same airy substrate mix. If your Acacia grows quickly, you can start with a light dose of cactus or succulent fertilizer (diluted) every 4 weeks during the growing season.

After a year, if properly hardened off, the plant can also go outside in a pot or in the ground (preferably in a greenhouse or Mediterranean garden setting). The Acacia is not winter-hardy in the Netherlands, so protection or bringing it indoors during colder months is essential.

Frequently Asked Questions about Acacia tortilis

  • Do I really have to scarify? Yes! Without sanding the seed, dormancy can last weeks or even months.
  • Can I use regular potting soil? No, it retains too much moisture. Use a mix with pumice and coconut fiber for the right balance.
  • Does the plant need a lot of light? Absolutely. Acacias are born sun lovers. Give them as much natural light as possible.

With these steps, you have everything you need to grow your own desert icon. Enjoy raising your umbrella tree! 🌞
