6 steps to sow and grow your own Adansonia Digitata Baobab

Here are some tips for growing the magical and special Baobab tree (Adansonia Digitata) yourself. Below, the growing instructions explain how you can easily sow and grow your own Adansonia Digitata in a few simple steps.

What do you need to grow it?

• Coconut soil or potting soil
• Perlite
• A sealable container about 10 cm deep
• Adansonia Digitata seed(s)

Planting Adansonia Digitata (Baobab) seeds:

1. To speed up germination, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 48 hours. Change the water every 12 hours. Rinse the seeds well after soaking and dry them before placing them in the soil.
2. Mix the coconut soil with perlite and put it in the sealable container (light-permeable). Then moisten the soil slightly with a watering can. The soil should not be soaked, or the seeds may rot.
3. Use your fingers to make a small hole about 1 cm deep and place the seed inside. Cover the seed with soil and press lightly.
4. Place each seed a few centimeters apart so the roots have enough space to grow.
5. Seal the container and place it in a warm spot (around 20 - 25 degrees Celsius). A heated greenhouse is ideal.
6. Every few days, remove the lid so the soil can air out. The soil must remain moist throughout the germination period.

The germination period ranges from 30 to 60 days. When the seedling grows against the lid, it’s time to repot it into a larger pot.

Water the seedling moderately but regularly and place it in a warm, bright spot, such as a windowsill. The seedling loves plenty of light and warmth… but not wet “feet.”
