A small seed that can grow into a truly impressive foliage plant. The Philodendron Selloum, now botanically known as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum, is known for its enormous, deeply lobed leaves and powerful tropical appearance. With the right warmth and humidity, you can grow this special plant entirely from seed. In this guide, you’ll discover how to turn a tiny seed into a real tropical showstopper, step by step.
Use Philodendron Selloum seeds for sowing. Fresh seeds have the best chance of germinating successfully.
You can soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 12 to 48 hours beforehand. This allows the seeds to absorb additional moisture and prepares them for germination. Use clean water and sow the seeds immediately after soaking.
Philodendron Selloum comes from a warm, humid climate. During germination, you therefore want a growing medium that retains moisture while still allowing enough air to reach the roots.
A good basic mix could consist of:
Want to keep it simple? You can also use approximately 70% coco fiber and 30% perlite. The mix should be thoroughly moist, but excess water must be able to drain away easily.
Use the Germie Modular Growing Kit or small pots of approximately 9 to 11 cm. Moisten the growing medium before sowing.
Plant each seed approximately 0.5 to 1 cm deep. Cover it with a thin layer of substrate and press it down gently. The seeds do not need to be buried deeply.
A transparent propagator lid or plastic wrap can help maintain high humidity. Make sure there is sufficient ventilation, though. Open the growing environment briefly each day to let fresh air in.
This is one of the most important keys to success. Philodendron Selloum likes warmth. During germination, try to maintain a temperature of approximately 20°C to 25°C.
A heat mat is especially useful when temperatures drop at night. A stable temperature is more important than being extremely warm for a few hours during the day and cold again at night.
Place the propagator in a bright spot, but avoid strong direct sunlight. Behind glass, the temperature can rise quickly and damage young seedlings.
Under good conditions, the first sprouts may appear after several weeks. Expect a germination period of approximately 4 to 10 weeks. Not every seed develops at the same pace, so give the seeds enough time.
Keep the substrate evenly moist throughout this period. It does not need to remain constantly waterlogged. Instead, check the substrate regularly before watering again.
As soon as a small green tip appears, the tropical promise slowly comes to life. Give the young seedling enough light and provide a warm environment. The first leaf will still be small, but its characteristic shape will soon begin to develop.
Once the young Philodendron has produced several leaves and is well rooted, you can repot it. Choose a pot with good drainage and use another airy, nutrient-rich substrate.
Water the plant regularly, but always allow excess water to drain away properly. The soil may remain slightly moist, but roots that stay wet for too long can cause problems.
Give the plant plenty of bright, indirect light. A spot with light partial shade works excellently. Avoid strong midday sun for young plants, especially when they are behind glass.
This tropical species appreciates higher humidity. In a dry living room, a spot with somewhat higher humidity can help it develop beautiful, healthy leaves.
The first leaves of a young plant are still relatively simple in shape. As the plant grows older and stronger, the leaves become larger and increasingly distinct lobes appear.
That is exactly when you begin to see why this species is so popular. The plant slowly changes from a small green seedling into a striking tropical showstopper.
A seed that slowly transforms into a plant with increasingly larger leaves. That is exactly the charm of Philodendron Selloum. You do not immediately buy a tropical showstopper—you watch it come to life. Give it warmth, moisture, light, and a little patience, and those first small leaves will be the beginning of something that can eventually become truly impressive. 🌿🌴
